Double row full complement cylindrical roller bearings The basic SKF assortment of double row full complement cylindrical roller bearings provided here includes NNCL (fig. 1), NNCF (fig. 2) and NNC (fig. 3) open design bearings, as well as sealed NNF design bearings (fig. 4). All bearings are non-separable and have an annular groove and three lubrication holes in the outer ring to facilitate lubrication. NNF design bearings have three additional lubrication holes in the inner ring. Single row full complement cylindrical roller bearings The basic SKF assortment of single row full complement cylindrical roller bearings provided here includes NCF and NJG design bearings. They are used to locate the shaft axially in one direction and eventually to accommodate axial displacement of the shaft relative to the housing in the opposite direction. NCF design NCF design bearings have two integral flanges on the inner ring and one on the outer ring (fig. 1). A retaining ring inserted in the outer ring on the side opposite the integral flange holds the bearing together. The retaining ring should not be loaded axially during operation.  fig. 1 NJG design NJG design bearings, which comprise the heavy 23 dimension series, are intended for very heavily loaded, low-speed applications. These bearings have two integral flanges on the outer ring and one on the inner ring (fig. 2). NJG design bearings have a self-retaining roller complement. Therefore, the outer ring with the roller complement can be separated from the inner ring without having to take special precautions to prevent the rollers from falling out (fig. 3). This simplifies mounting and dismounting.  fig. 2  fig. 3 Matched bearings SKF can supply matched bearings. To match bearings, SKF combines bearings so that the difference in cross-section height lies within a very small tolerance range. This reduced tolerance range is a precondition for equal load sharing between the bearings. Matched bearings are identified by a designation suffix:DR for a set of two bearingsTR for a set of three bearingsQR for a set of four bearings Multi-row cylindrical roller bearings Four-row (fig 1) and six-row cylindrical roller bearings (fig 2) are used almost exclusively for the roll necks of rolling mill stands, calenders and roller presses. Their friction is low compared with other roller bearings. As they are normally mounted with an interference fit on the roll neck, they are particularly suitable for rolling mill applications where the rolling speed is high.  fig 1  fig 2 The low bearing cross section allows for relatively large roll neck diameters in comparison with the roll diameter. Since very many rollers can be incorporated, the radial load carrying capacity is exceptionally high. Multi-row cylindrical roller bearings are only able to accommodate radial loads. They are therefore mounted together with deep groove or angular contact ball bearings, or with tapered roller bearings, either radial or thrust designs, which take up the axial loads. The four-row and six-row cylindrical roller bearings are of separable design, i.e. the ring or rings with integral flanges and the roller and cage assemblies can be mounted independently of the free rings, or all bearing components can be mounted separately. This considerably simplifies bearing mounting, maintenance and inspection. A certain limited axial displacement of the shaft with respect to the housing can be accommodated within the bearing. SKF four-row cylindrical roller bearings have a cylindrical bore and some sizes are also available with tapered bore. Bearings with tapered bore can be adjusted during mounting to give a certain radial internal clearance or a defined preload.

 Contamination is a leading cause of bearing failure.  Heavy industrial applications are susceptible to even higher levels of contamination compared to others.  In order to combat against contamination and improve bearing performance, NSK applied AIP to suggest product changes that resulted in over $200, 000 in savings. A hammer mill application was using a competitor’s SAF pillow block and bearing that was failing after only 4 months of operation.  Upon inspection, NSK determined that debris had entered the block.  Excessive change-outs were causing significant financial strain in lost production and maintenance cost. NSK proposed changing from a standard labyrinth LER seal to a NSK Spherical Roller Bearing inside a SAF Pillow Block (SAF22538) with Taconite Seal TER155OS.  TER-OS Taconite Seal   The TER-OS taconite seals are designed to prevent entry of contaminants in severe service conditions.  Each seal is equipped with a shaft contact spring-loaded oil seal, grease-charged channel, felt shaft seal and O-ring seal in the housing labyrinth to form an impenetrable barrier and provide a tight, yet flexible fit.  The use of this seal protected the spherical roller bearing within the SAF housing to achieve longer life.  The NSK solution provided over 2 years of service life compared to 4 months service lifefrom competitor’s product. What is the designation for sets (pairs) on your angular contact bearings?  Paired arrangements for angular contact bearings are designated as “D2” (universal flush ground pair), “DB” (matched back-to-back pair), “DF” (matched face-to-face pair) and “DT” (matched tandem pair). What is back-to-back and face-to-face in angular contact bearings?  Back-to-back (DB) or face-to-face (DF) are duplex arrangements of angular contact bearings (can also refer to taper bearings). Radial loads and axial loads in either direction can be accommodated by these arrangements. DB arrangements have a large spread between the bearing centers and should be selected when a rigid shaft is required for the application. DF arrangements have a very short spread between centers and should be applied when slight shaft misalignment is needed. The DB arrangement requires the inner rings to be clamped whereas the DF arrangement requires the outer rings to be clamped. What is the difference between angular contact bearings and deep groove ball bearings?  Deep groove ball bearings are a non-separable type bearing with the line connecting contact points of the inner ring, steel ball, and outer ring of 0º in the radial direction. They are designed to take mainly radial loads but can handle some axial load in either direction. Angular contact bearings are also a non-separable type. The line connecting contact points of the inner ring, steel ball, and outer ring creates an angle with the line drawn in the radial direction called the contact angle. Angular contact bearings can accommodate relatively heavy axial loads in one direction in addition to radial loads. The larger the contact angle, the larger the axial loading capacity becomes.
